I love coffee. I love everything about it. The aroma, the warmth (or coolness in the summer) the swift kick in the ass it provides, everything.
So imagine my DESPAIR when my adrenal results came back and things were no bueno. One of the things I talk about in my hormone balancing program called, “The Happy Hormone Guide: Supercharge Your Energy, Focus, Sleep, Sex Drive & and Weight Loss” is how caffeine affects your hormones.
For someone like me, coffee was having a direct effect on my adrenal glands.
The adrenals are these teensy but ÜBER important glands that sit on top of your kidneys. When we face stressors, their function is to release hormones that trigger the fight or flight response, which floods our body with adrenaline. Once that happens, our body is on alert, ready for action!
Here’s where caffeine can be a problem: caffeine stimulates your adrenals which means that every time you have caffeine, you’re activating your body’s fight or flight response. Every time you have caffeine, this happens. Over and over and over again. Over time, your adrenal glands start to burn out, and since this can lead to adrenal fatigue…something you really REALLY don’t want, in the name of health, I was ready and willing to reduce/eliminate my coffee consumption.
…but I wasn’t happy about it.
I mean, I LOVE coffee. Like, a lot.
Initially, I couldn’t fathom life without my morning cup of joe.
I mean, come on! My soothing morning cup of coffee made me a nice person! It’s what put the JOY in rising and shining! It made the hustle and bustle of getting ready for school much easier to deal with. It made me not dislike my kids first thing in the morning. It even gave me more oomph to complete my morning workouts.
I made a deal with myself- I would cut coffee out for a month, and see how things went. If I was utterly miserable, I’d work with my naturopath to figure something else out…but it never got that far because by day 3 of no coffee, I felt like a brand new person.
My energy skyrocketed, my moods evened out, I could go and go and go and go! No more afternoon naps, no more moodiness, no more waking up feeling tired even though I slept all night long, NO MORE!!!
Feeling so awesome motivated me to stick with no coffee, and now that my adrenals have healed and my results are normal, I’ll have maybe, MAYBE, 2 cups of coffee a MONTH…and only actually drink half.
Now, I will say that while I don’t miss the caffeine, I do miss my ritual of waking up and having something warm and soothing. I tried a few things that made it ok, like a cup of yerba mate tea, or some other form of tea, but it just wasn’t the same as that cup of joe.
That was until I came across this beauty…
This delicious, easy to make, cup of perfection, FINALLY brought me back the joy that coffee did in the mornings, without any of the side effects. Plus, I could even have a second cup in the afternoon on a rainy day, without worrying about the caffeine keeping me up later because there isn’t any in it!
It’s soothing, it’s versatile, it’s a welcoming hug in the cool mornings.
It’s Crio Bru.
Thank you Universe! I can look forward to my mornings again.
What is Crio Bru?
Crio Bru is a brewed drink made from 100% cacao beans (also known as cocoa beans), roasted to perfection. Named after the most prized of cacao beans, the Criollo, Crio Bru will astound your taste buds with its complex chocolaty flavors and subtle aromas which come right from the cacao bean itself! It is 100% natural and 100% pure.
Crio Bru is the ultimate superfood. It is low in calories and contains no sugar, no fat, no dairy, no sodium, no cholesterol and practically no caffeine, yet is extremely high in antioxidants, theobromine and a host of other vitamins and minerals.
Crio Bru is both a new drink and an ancient one. Ka’kao was an everyday drink of the kings and peoples of the great Incas, Mayans, Olmecs, and Aztecs for hundreds of years, but was changed when the Old World met the New. The incredible health properties of cacao are currently lost in the process of making modern chocolate, but with Crio Bru, they are preserved.
8 Reasons why I love Crio Bru and you will too!
1. Boosts your immune system with 4x’s the antioxidants of coffee, and 2x’s the antioxidants of blueberries
2. Increases energy naturally with theobromine, not caffeine! Cocoa beans contain a natural stimulant called theobromine that is a relative of caffeine. Unlike caffeine, theobromine gives you a noticeable increase in energy without making you feel nervous or jittery
3. Curbs your appetite
4. Supports your heart, brain, and bones with magnesium
5. Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels with chromium and zinc
6. It’s safe and healthy for kids
7. Comes in many different flavors
8. No sugar, gluten, fat, sodium, or cholesterol
How to make it
There are different ways to make it. You can use a french press, or brew it in a standard auto-drip machine with a permanent gold filter, or do what I do most times: boil a cup of water, turn off heat, add 2 tbsp of the grounds, cover and let it sit for 10 minutes, then strain into my cup and voila!
The rule of thumb is 2tbsp of grounds per 6oz of water.
You can drink Crio Bru “black” with nothing added or you can experiment by adding your favorite creamer, sweetener, and spices.
Crio Bru is for ANYONE! Even if you are lucky enough (damn you) to be able to drink coffee. You can enjoy Crio Bru in between cups, in the afternoon if you worry about the caffeine in coffee keeping you up at night, or if you’re trying to reduce your coffee consumption. It’s awesome, drink it for whatever reason you want!
Have you tried Crio Bru before? If so, what’s your favorite flavor? I loveeeeee the Maya! If you haven’t tried it yet, what flavor are you most excited to order?
